For many athletes there is no relief. In a recent study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (Am J Sports Med. 2010 Jan;38(1):125-32) 40 out of 47 individuals with chronic recalcitrant shin pain returned to normal activity after a series of low energy extracorporeal shock wave treatments.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy should only be performed under the supervision of a qualified physician and other potentially dangerous causes of shin pain need to be excluded before the therapy can be initiated. Drs. Rifat and Moeller have been using extracorporeal shock wave therapy to treat patients since 2000. EPAT, the newest form of this technology, is available as an office procedure.
